FAQ’s

I’ve written a book, what do I do next?

Congratulations! That is a milestone worthy of celebration. For us to consider you for representation, it is essential you follow the guidelines on our submissions page here.

Can you help me with editorial work and publicity advice?

Curtis Brown does not offer publicity services, and we are only able to offer advice on books represented by the agency. If you need editorial assistance please visit the Freelance Editor’s Network here.

How can I make my submission stand out from the hundreds of others you receive?

We’re looking for a professional introductory letter, which will include a bit about yourself and your writing history, and a clear synopsis that sets up the stakes of your novel. In the sample chapters, we are looking for great writing and terrific storytelling, so our tip is to make sure you’ve done enough drafts and are happy your work is as polished as it can be.

Can I send my work to a specific Curtis Brown agent?

Submit according to our guidelines, and you can address your email or cover letter to a particular agent.

I’ve had my work represented by a Curtis Brown agent. Can I send it to another?

If you have been in touch with a Curtis Brown agent in the past, however long ago, please note this in your new submission. It’s important that we know your background with the agency.

What’s the best piece of advice you have for aspiring writers?

Our best advice is to read widely and daily, across genres. Great writers are great readers first and foremost. Happy reading!

Are you really not accepting the genres listed on the submissions page?

In order to best serve their existing clients and in line with market demand, our agents carefully select which genres they are accepting at any time. Our submissions page reflects the current and/or upcoming submission period, so if a genre is listed on the page, then we are not accepting work in that vein.

How do I know my submission was received?

We do not typically acknowledge receipt of each submission. Unless you receive an email bounce-back, we have received your work and there is no need to resend. If you have received an email bounce-back, please check that you have submitted to the correct email address.

I have an idea for a television show. Do you accept screenplays?

We do not represent screenplays or theatre scripts. Please see our submissions guidelines for more specifics on what we handle.

My work has already been published. Can you represent me?

We are unable to represent books that have an existing contract or that have been self-published, however if you have new works completed, or in the pipeline, we’d be happy to consider them. Please follow our submission guidelines.
